Trajan Pro

September 27th, 2009

Here’s a video from last year that I just got around to posting on YouTube. It’s called Trajan Pro, and it was my submission for a class called Intro to Time-Based Art and Design.

Watch fullscreen for best viewing experience.

Read on for information about the video.

The assignment was to create a visual, time-based narrative using only typographic elements from a particular font. I used a few other fonts in mine, but their use was contextual and approved.

We were shown some examples of previous years’ work. Of those, the following three caught my eye and served as inspiration whilst creating my piece:

My roommate, Jeremy, Latin and History double major that he is, helped me flesh out the concept with historical background, and of course he provided the translations for the introduction.

The video was created in Adobe After Effects, a program I had never used until taking this class. To learn the program, I took a weekend and created this video.

Our lectures from this class last year were recorded, and are available for free through iTunes U.

The other videos are interesting- especially Papyrus (I love the hammer bit.) Ultimately I think your personal font choice worked a lot better with color than it would have in black and white, like the others. You also had clearer scene changes, I think. My only complaint is that the intro is still about half the video. :)

Awesome project! Thanks for updating me while you were working on this- it was really cool to watch it come together.

As work on this project was wrapping up and I started showing it to people, I realized that the introduction was waaay too long. I would have gone back and fixed it, but I didn’t want to retime the rest of the video to the music. I could also have made the Latin in the intro more abstract, and done a lot more with motion and shapes, but I had to decide at some point that it was done, learn from my mistakes, and move on.
